Eagle Eye Reporter Amy Muhr’s father, Jeff Muhr, wanted to take her and her brother Jeremy Muhr on a journey to see the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash site where a Rugby team flew to Chile for a Rugby match and they crashed in the center of the Andes Mountains killing several passengers leaving them stranded for 72 days. The team realized they were not going to be rescued, and it resulted in them making the horrible decision to survive by cannibalism, eating the deceased passengers for survival. During their time on the mountain, they were also struck by an avalanche that killed eight more passengers, burying them under the snow. The situation the team was put in was like no other, as they were stranded in an isolated area among the most treacherous peaks in the world. Although the situation was riddled with unimaginable hardships, inspiration managed to find its place by remaining members having the needed ambition and love to survive. Two teammates had to walk to Chile on foot, weighing half of their body weight, facing injuries and starvation, and eventually remaining sixteen passengers were rescued. The Muhrs had the opportunity to visit the very site and even met one of the survivors, Eduardo Strauch. He was a close friend of Jeff Muhr, who visited the site nineteen years ago and wanted to share the experience with his kids and have them meet Eduardo several years later. The site was inspiring and powerful, and a long journey to endure, as they were on horseback for several hours to reach the site. It was incredible to see how this team managed to survive in such a place and learning the important lessons from Edurado about strength and ambition. To learn more about this event, read Out Of The Silence by Eduardo Strauch or watch Society of the Snow on Netflix.
